You won’t believe this, but I turn away about half my new clients because they don’t have a solid brand. You heard that right. It’s like asking that special person out on a date and getting turned down. I don’t mean to do it, but it’s always the best thing. Why?
Here’s how it goes down. For the past 20 years, I’ve had plenty of people who ask me for . Fill in the blank with a website, a social media campaign, graphics, etc. It doesn’t really matter what’s in the blank, I always, ALWAYS ask them one question.
“What do you want your to do?”
Can you guess the response I get most often? If your answer is that the person’s eyes glaze over, they start stuttering and, in general, just look dumbfounded, then you’re absolutely right.
In all my time working with new clients, I’ve never really had a solid answer to that question. It amazes me how willing people are to spend money without thinking of what they should expect in return for that investment.
And here’s the real kicker, they should expect something in return. Right?!
WHAT DOES BRANDING DO?
So you know what I do with some of my clients, but what do I do with the ones who I continue to work with? The short answer is branding.
Branding isn’t just a logo or a name. It’s all of the elements of your business that leave an impression with your customers. It’s what people think of you before, during and after you connect with them. And it’s so much more than that.
Spending money on a website, social media, a logo, a name or even a blog is wasted if you don’t take some time on the front end to develop your brand. But it costs you even more.
What’s the one biggest, most sacred resource of every new entrepreneur? It’s not money or even time. Those parts of your business will come and go. The most precious resource any startup or new business will even have is:
You might not have found this out yet, but energy is a limited resource for your work. Your business depends on your energy to keep it running.
When you waste time, money and energy on your content without considering your branding, you will fail. It’s the reason that only 5% of bloggers actually make a living writing their blog. It isn’t just because they write great content or have a snazzy theme or great graphics.
BRANDING FRONT LOADS SUCCESS
It takes more than that to succeed as an entrepreneur. You have to connect with the people who value you what you do. And that is the work of branding.
Of the clients that I take on, I always take them through my branding process. It helps them realize their goals so that they can connect with their target audience. What goals?
- Clarifying what you offer
- Exploring your brand identity
- Finding target audiences
- Determining possible competition
- Differentiating yourself within your market
- Identifying driving values of your brand
- Refining your brand’s personality
- Setting clear expectations and goals
- Developing a merit relationship with your target user
- Translating your brand into your target market
Does that sound like it might be helpful to you? If so, I would be glad to give you my process for developing brands. It’s the same process I’ve used with clients who generate millions of dollars a year and those who are just starting out.
