This DIY light kit will impress even the savviest video people. Seriously, I’ve started using this light kit instead of the professional light kits I’ve owned for years. Here’s why.
DIY LIGHTING KIT CHALLENGE
It all started with a challenge. I needed a small kino style light kit for a video shoot. It had to be small because the room was too small for a softbox light or umbrella light. I also needed a light that was already diffused or that I could diffuse is a small area.
To make this a harder challenge for myself, I also wanted the lights to pack away in a small space and be able to travel if I needed to take them on a remote shoot.
These lights are 2 feet long and about 2 inches wide and tall. Small enough to fit into many suitcases. There are two LED strips per light. You can stack them next to each other or use them separately.

DIY LIGHTING KIT BUILD
This LED LIghting Kit build is super easy. I used the Utilitech 2′ Shop light. You will also want some tools to help you. I used:
- A drill
- A straight head screwdriver
- A phillips head screwdriver
- An extension cord
- A 3/8″ conduit connector
- A 1/2″ conduit hanger
- A pack of #8, 3/8″ sheet metal screws
For details on how to make all of that come together and look like a LED light kit, watch this:
