Almost anyone can build a website these days. WordPress has taken over the web, but if you can’t make that work then there are sites like Squarespace, Weebly, and Wix that can make starting your web presence even easier. So why do so many websites get little to no traffic? It all starts way before the first line of code.
Start With Why
Working with a client, the very first question is, “Why do you want a website?” The answer to this question directs the rest of the work. Some people only feel like they need a web presence because their competitors have a website. Some people want to make millions off their site (if that’s you, you need to invest a lot of time and money in it), some people just need a simple one-page marker. Whatever your reason, knowing why will answer the what.
Find A Target
Once the initial reason for the site is resolved, the next step begins. You need a target. The more targeted your site is, the more effective it can be. If you make uber high-end kitchen cabinets, then targeting all cabinet buyers doesn’t work. You attract a lot of unsatisfied non-customers. You need to find a way to hit your target. Pinterest works for high-end products since it only accumulates the most interesting products (at least in theory).
The point is, find a target. There’s an old Charlie Brown comic where he has a bow and arrow and a can of paint. First, he shoots the arrow and then where it lands, he paints a target around it. Don’t be like that. Find your target and hit it.
What Just Happened
So many people get to this place. They’ve done the work and launched their website. Then nothing. They wait for the swarms of internets to make them famous or rich. Launching your website is only on step. You have to know what happens after the launch. You have to have metrics!
How can you know if your site hits its target if you don’t measure its impact? You can’t! Measuring your site’s traffic and responding to it is more important than ever. And it’s really not that hard.
